Gaultier editorials has adorned my walls, my journals and locker. I loved his take on fashion. It was almost like he was making fun of all the stuffiness that’s involved in high fashion. When he announced that this would be his final couture show, I could not believe it.
What is Paris Couture without Mr.Gaultier?
Of course he went out with a bang! With over 170 looks, he really flexed on the runway the reasons why we fell in love with him and continued to worship at his alter of couture. He was always ahead of the time. His runways would have all shapes, sizes, genders, ages, gender fluidity…before all social media trending hashtags.
My first exposure to Mr.Gaultier was Madonna’s Blonde Ambition tour looks. Although I was way too young to understand why I loved it, I just knew there was something so surreal about it. I have always gravitated towards fashion that looked like it was from a different world, like it was breaking rules that it wasn’t suppose to and somehow it exist in my reality. I think it’s my love of comics and the hyper stylized world they exist in that fueled this gravitation.
Although we are bidding farewell to Mr.Gaultier’s Couture shows, his influence on the fashion world is forever. He’s one of the designers that have inspired me that rules are meant to be broken, to rebel against the norms and most of all, have fun! Fashion is a form of expression and if you’re going to be silly take it all the WAY and make it devastatingly chic.
